As Isaiah begins to enumerate the sins that God’s people have committed against him, he begins with the sin of ingratitude—the ingratitude of his own children. God had been so good to Israel, blessing them more than he had blessed any people on the face of the earth. Yet, they still rebelled against the most loving of fathers. In this message, Fr. Toms reminds us that it is not only the ancient people of Israel who were guilty of ingratitude toward God, but that the entire human race is guilty of this horrible sin. Human beings are unaware of the multitudes of blessings that God has bestowed upon them, and they never pause to give him thanks and ask what they can do to show their gratefulness to such a kind Creator. All people need to come humbly before God, asking for the forgiveness of this sin and all others. Christian people must realize that when they sin, it is a sin of the highest ingratitude, for they have received the greatest of all blessings: eternal life through Jesus Christ.
