Because God was in covenant with Israel, he often described his relationship to them as a marriage. When Israel disobeyed God’s commandments and worshiped other gods, the sin was one of spiritual adultery. God looked upon the nation as his unfaithful wife. In this introduction to the prophecy of Hosea, Fr. Toms demonstrates Israel’s long history of unfaithfulness and the judgment that came upon the nation for her disobedience. Yet, the message of Hosea is that God still loves his people, and he wants his unfaithful spouse to be restored to fellowship with him. Hosea will provide a living illustration of Israel’s sin when the prophet is commanded to marry an unfaithful woman.
