The Chaff Driven by the Wind (Psalm 1:4)

In verses 2 and 3 of this first Psalm, the writer has described the rich and satisfying life of the godly person. In verse 4, the Psalmist turns to a description of the ungodly, and we find that their lives are exactly the opposite of the lives of those who meditate in the Scriptures day and night and live in obedience to God. In this message, Fr. Toms demonstrates how Scripture describes the impermanence and futility of a life apart from a relationship with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. The image of those who live in disobedience to God as being “chaff,” is a sad and terrifying image. The Christian is encouraged to see by faith that though the ungodly appear to be prosperous, powerful, and permanent, such a description of them is an illusion. The difference between the Christian and the unbeliever is that the Christian is stable tree that will endure forever, while the unbeliever is chaff being carried away to judgment.
