Though Isaiah wrote his prophecy in the 8th century B. C., his message is relevant for us in this present hour. Since human nature never changes, it is not surprising that Isaiah speaks to us just as he spoke to ancient Israel. Isaiah preached in times that were just as turbulent as ours to a nation that was just as sinful as ours. Because of their sinfulness, the northern tribes of Israel and the southern tribe of Judah were facing the threat of the judgment of God. Isaiah’s name means “the Lord is salvation.” Though the people of Israel deserved the fury of God’s wrath, he offered them, and us, a way of salvation. Unfortunately, people will do everything except trust in God for their salvation. One of the great themes of Isaiah is to look to God alone for redemption. In these sermons from Isaiah, Fr. Toms will demonstrate that salvation comes to us through Jesus Christ alone. We cannot be saved through politics, education, or our own goodness. Isaiah is sometimes referred to as “as the evangelical prophet,” because there are so many pictures of Christ contained in his prophecy. The message of Isaiah is that though we deserve the judgment of Almighty God, we can be saved through life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
